Did you know that D-Day was almost betrayed by the weather TWICE?

You probably already know that the Normandy landings were originally planned for the 5th of June, 1944, and had to be delayed one day, at the very end of the suitable time window, due to bad weather. What you might not have heard yet was that the weather also imperiled the operation a good year earlier, in May 1943.

Norfolk House in London was an office building housing numerous senior Allied officers at the time. One of them left some documents detailing an early version of the plan on a table in a room with an open window. Nature does not care about the secrecy of military plans, and a morning breeze blew the papers straight out the window and into the street. Fortunately for everyone, the papers were picked up by a man whose name is lost to posterity, and whose eyesight was too bad to see what was written on the sheets. Having no better idea what to do, he handed the documents over to a guard in front of another, nearby government building, thus preventing a possibly catastrophic leak.
